Doctor Strange, created by Marvel Cinematic Universe, based on characters created by Stan Lee: a Film Review

Stephen Strange is a very wealthy, highly acclaimed, and cocky neurosurgeon.  When he injures his hands in a car crash, he loses the one thing that he valued in life…his ability to perform precise and complicated surgeries.

In the vain and grasping attempt at regaining all of the uses of his hands Strange travels to Kama-Taj.  He is taken in by Mordo, a sorcerer who follows the Ancient One, a being that is able to travel between dimensions.  She reluctantly agrees to teach Strange the ways of dimensional and astral travel.

As Doctor Strange studies with the Ancient One, Mordo and in the library closely guarded by Master Wong, he learns of the protections of Earth…the Sanctums that the sorcerers are sworn to protect.

When a group of zealots attack the New York Sanctum, Strange holds them off with the help of the Cloak of Leviation, only to be critically injured in the attack.  He teleports himself to the hospital where another doctor saves him…when he returns to the Sanctum all the secrets of the world that Strange has been learning about are turned on their heads as he races to protect the other Sanctums of Earth…and hopefully save the world in the process.

Review (contains spoilers):

I just have to start this review with this: THE CLOAK!!! I don’t know a lot about the comics for Doctor Strange…I’m really getting to them…but I think it was brilliant to make the Cloak its own CHARACTER!  The amount of personality that the artists got from the combination of practical cloak (the costumes team did an incredible job with this piece) and the CGI manipulation of the garment to give it another level of personality was just beautiful.

Besides that this movie is ultra trippy.  Between the whole backstory and lore of the Ancient One and the multiverse and the fact that so many people can manipulate reality in a very Inception kind of way it is not a film to watch if you can’t handle that (or honestly if you get motion sick).

If you can then it is a great film.  Stephen Strange is just as arrogant as you would expect from a world renowned neurosurgeon.  He learns to harness all of the bad traits he has into something good.

Plus his really cute cape sidekick is just a great piece of CGI art.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
